Joan Saddler (National Director of Patient and Public Affairs at the Department of Health) discusses ways in which the NHS can empower and inform patients, in order to lead to a safer public service through the government's white paper 'Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS', which aims to put patient choice, information and outcomes at the heart of everything the NHS does.
